Autoflower vs Regular or Photoperiod Seeds: Untangling the Terms
Autoflower and photoperiod-sensitive describe flowering response. Regular describes a sex-related seed category. Treating all three as competing options mixes two different questions; this comparison shows where each word belongs.

In seed descriptions, photoperiod usually stands for photoperiod-sensitive flowering. The technical subject is response to the daily light–dark cycle.
Regular is used for material not designated feminized. It is not a scientific synonym for photoperiod-sensitive, even when a particular catalogue uses the words together.
The first axis concerns flowering response: autoflowering or photoperiod-sensitive. The second concerns the sex-related category: feminized or regular. A description can supply one value from each axis, or leave one axis unstated.

A useful distinction follows: a name for a response is not a universal explanation of all the genetics behind that response. Nor is it a complete description of architecture, chemical composition or duration. Those are additional subjects, not hidden meanings of the word autoflower.
Everyday language often uses regular to mean standard or usual. In a technical seed description, however, regular is also a category term. Switching between those meanings without saying so is one reason the comparison becomes confusing.
For example, a fictional writer says “autoflower versus regular plants” but later explains that the second group is photoperiod-sensitive. The article is actually comparing flowering responses. The goal is accurate reading, not finding fault with every shorthand phrase. Informal wording can be understandable in context. It becomes misleading when readers carry the shorthand into a general rule.
“This line is described as regular and photoperiod-sensitive” supplies both pieces of information. “This line is regular” supplies only one. “This line is autoflowering” supplies the other. The missing information should remain unknown until the source provides it.
Likewise, a menu item called photoperiod may contain feminized descriptions. That is not a contradiction: the menu and the product label can be organising different dimensions. The distinction is clearest when the page names each trait separately.
A cultivar name adds identity as another dimension. A familiar name does not resolve an incomplete trait description, and identical names from different sources should not automatically be treated as identical material.
