The strain library
A dessert-inspired name with two familiar parent lines. Follow Cherry Pie’s attributed pedigree, the language behind its aroma and its place in a separately named descendant.
Behind the name
Royal Queen Seeds lists Cherry Pie with Granddaddy Purple and Durban Poison as parents. That first-party description anchors the pedigree used on this page.
Granddaddy Purple also has its own profile in this library, where the focus is its naming history. The two pages answer different questions: one follows a parent’s story, while this one examines the named cross in which that parent appears.
Royal Queen Seeds describes berry-like notes alongside vanilla and cookie associations. That vocabulary helps explain the dessert theme of Cherry Pie without turning the name into a literal ingredient list.
A sensory description can connect a familiar food memory with a plant aroma. It does not establish that the flower contains cherries, flour or vanilla extract, nor that every specimen will have exactly the same balance of notes.
Royal Queen Seeds identifies its Cherry Pie entry as photoperiod and separately publishes a Cherry Pie Auto entry. These are distinct catalogue records, even though their names share the same core words.
Keep the Auto label when citing that version or captioning its photograph. A shortened caption would lose information about which record the image belongs to. This page keeps the versions in context rather than assigning one version’s details to both.
Royal Queen Seeds lists Forbidden Fruit as Cherry Pie crossed with Tangie. In that pedigree, Cherry Pie has moved from the subject of this profile to a parent of another named cross.
The relationship gives a clear next step in the family tree. Forbidden Fruit is not a synonym for Cherry Pie, and its citrus-led descriptions should remain attached to its own account rather than being copied back onto the parent.
A strain can be described as the offspring of named parents and then appear as a parent itself. Cherry Pie provides an example: the RQS account links it back to Granddaddy Purple and Durban Poison, and onward to Forbidden Fruit.
Reading those relationships in order is more informative than grouping every fruit or dessert name together. The shared naming style alone cannot establish a genetic connection; an explicit parent statement can describe the claimed relationship.
